Stephen Johnson is an award-winning woodburning artist in Southwest Montana.

Born in Texas and raised in Washington State, Stephen developed his passion for art at a young age. After starting a family in the Pacific Northwest, he became a housepainter to provide for his family. Eventually, Stephen and his family moved to the Gallatin Valley, where he now focuses on his woodburnings and photography.

Stephen's woodburnings are inspired by the natural beauty of life in the Rocky Mountains and the surrounding wilderness. Using a variety of techniques he has learned and developed over the years, he creates intricate and detailed images of wildlife, landscapes, and other designs, with a focus on capturing the essence of nature in each piece. His work is often described as realistic, highly detailed and thought-provoking. Stephen is passionate about his work and strives to create pieces that are both beautiful and meaningful.

In addition to his art, Stephen has taken on photography as a new self-taught artistic journey. His photography reflects his love of the outdoors, and he is particularly drawn to capturing the unique landscapes and wildlife that the vast wilderness of Montana has to offer. His photographs often serve as inspiration for his woodburnings, as he frequently incorporates his photographed subjects into his work.

Stephen takes pleasure in the simple joys of spending quality time with his grandchildren, who never fail to bring smiles to his face. He finds solace in nature, utilizing his hiking escapades as opportunities to hunt for one-of-a-kind rocks and petrified wood, each with their own fascinating stories etched deep within their ancient surfaces.

Stephen Johnson’s love of nature and his passion for his art are evident in every piece he creates.
